From Latin explanatio 'an explanation', from explanare 'explain'; explain + -ation.

來自拉丁文 explanatio「解釋」，即 explain 加 -ation。

Picture a gap in someone's head — something happened and they cannot see why — and picture words being laid across that gap until it closes. An explanation is whatever fills the gap. Sometimes the gap is "why did this happen?", sometimes it is "how does this thing work?", and the same word covers both.

可以想成：對方腦中有一個缺口——事情發生了，但他看不出來為什麼——然後你用話把那個缺口一段一段補起來。explanation 就是拿來補缺口的東西。有時候缺口是「這件事怎麼會這樣？」，有時候是「這個東西怎麼用？」，英文都用同一個字。差別只在缺的是原因，還是操作方法。
