Think of something real being stretched past its real size — pulled wider, louder, worse or grander than it actually is. The thing itself has not been swapped for a fake; it has been pulled out of shape. Exaggerated can be thought of as the shape after that pull. Sometimes the stretching happens in what people say about a thing, and sometimes in how a body or a voice performs it, but the pull is the same either way.
