Restrained describes behavior, emotion, or style that is controlled and held back, on purpose, rather than let loose freely — the opposite of wild, extreme, or over-the-top. A restrained reaction to bad news means someone stayed calm instead of shouting or crying, even if they felt strongly inside. Restrained can also describe design or writing style — 'restrained elegance' means simple and tasteful, without unnecessary decoration, showing good self-control rather than showing off.
