A drafter is a person whose job is to make careful drawings of things that will be built — houses, machines, roads — so that other people can follow the plan. Older English, especially British, often says draughtsman or draftsman for the same job; drafter is the newer, more American word, and it does not mark the person as male. In offices you will also hear drafter for the person who the first full version of a law, a contract, or a report, because that first version is a draft. Though actually, these two jobs share a spelling for a reason: both come from drawing something up on paper. The technical-drawing sense is the one people mean when they say drafter instead of draftsman. It is a job word. It is not a soldier, and it is not about cold air coming through a window.
