The fact of having many different kinds of people or things together in one place or group.

Picture looking into one group — a classroom, a forest, a playlist — and finding that the things inside it are not all the same kind. Diversity is that not-all-alike quality, seen from outside as a feature of the whole. English uses it two ways that look almost identical: as the quality itself (this school values diversity) and as the spread of different things you actually find (a diversity of birds).
