An assortment is a mixture: different things, or several kinds of the same kind of thing, gathered as one group. A chocolate assortment is the classic picture — one box, many fillings. Shops sell an assortment of teas, socks, or . The word is a little more formal and “on the box” than mix or bunch, but the idea is the same. It does not promise that the mix was planned with great care; a random assortment is a perfectly normal phrase, and it means the opposite of carefully matched. You can have a wide assortment (many kinds) or a limited one. In speech, mix often feels warmer; assortment shows up when someone is naming what is in the pack.
