One way to hold this word: you are standing in exactly the same spot as a moment ago, and nothing around you has moved, but the arrow that told you which way is which has gone. Fog covers the ridge, or six station exits all look alike, and suddenly you cannot say which direction you came from. Nothing is wrong with you and nothing is wrong with the place. What has dropped out is the line between you and the world that let you point.

The word is dis- plus oriented (or disorient plus -ed). Dis- takes something away, so the word literally says that the orientation has been removed.
