Think of something that holds a load inside it and has one opening: a chimney, a pipe, a bus, a river channel, a stomach, a pocket full of money that is not yours. Disgorge is the moment that opening lets go. What was held comes out in quantity, in one push rather than a slow leak, and it usually comes out because it cannot be held any longer or because someone has made it come out.

From the word’s history

The source gives the origin as Middle French desgorger. The word gorge sits inside it, and in English gorge also names the throat, which fits the picture of a load leaving through one narrow opening.

Three branches

verb · C1

If a thing disgorges what is inside it, it lets a large amount of that thing pour out, usually through an opening such as a mouth, a pipe or a chimney.

verb · C2

To give back money or goods that you took illegally, usually because a court or an official body makes you do it.

verb · C2

To bring food back up from your stomach and out through your mouth.
