    正式To officially reduce the value of a country's money compared with the money of other countries.

    文法及物、不及物兩種都可以：後面可以接受詞，也可以不接。

    這個 devalue 是政府或央行做的決定：把自己國家的錢對外的價格調低，讓出口變便宜、進口變貴。它跟 depreciate 不一樣——depreciate 是市場自己跌，沒有人下令；devalue 是有人動手調的，所以句子裡通常看得到是誰做的。這個字幾乎只出現在財經新聞裡。

    To treat someone or something as less important or less valuable than they really are.

    文法及物動詞：動作後面要接受詞。

    這一層的 devalue 跟錢無關：它講的是把一個人、一份工作或一種能力說得比實際上小。重點在「說法」和「對待的方式」，不是東西真的變差了。它跟 criticize 不一樣——criticize 是指出哪裡不好，devalue 是連價值都不承認。常見的受詞是 contribution、work、experience 這類本來就有分量的東西。
