Picture this: your body is still in the classroom, but your mind has walked out — you are having a dream while wide awake, so what is in front of you quietly stops registering.

From the word’s history

Simply day + dream: a dream you have in the daytime, awake. Parallel compounds exist in Dutch (dagdroom) and German (Tagtraum).
