A daydreamer is a person who : they sit there, often with work still in front of them, and their mind walks off into something nice — a holiday, a crush, a life that feels better than now. The word names the person, not the action (the action is to ). Teachers and parents use it when someone looks awake but is not really here. It can sound a little critical, like you are saying their head is in the clouds; it can also sound soft, even fond, as if that person lives in a prettier world. Though actually, almost everyone does this sometimes; we only call someone a daydreamer when it happens often enough that other people notice. Everyday English, not fancy and not rude.
