You can think of crick as a bend that got stuck. A neck is held at an odd angle for too long — against a bus window, over a laptop, tipped back at a tall building — and the muscle stops letting go. Everything the word does comes out of that one small, stubborn bend: the feeling it leaves, the movement that caused it, and the word you use while you are still holding the awkward angle.

Middle English crike meant a spasm of the neck as early as the 1400s, and is likely related to Old Norse kriki, a bend or a nook — the same bend that is still in the modern word.
