make up, form · verb · C1
To be the parts that together form a group, a place, or a whole.
組成
One way to picture it: pieces are set in place, and what stands there afterwards is the thing itself — the parts don't just build the whole, they are the whole.
Latin constituere = con- (together) + statuere (to set up, to place standing), from stare 'to stand'. To set things up together so they stand as one thing.
Wiktionary: constitute < Latin cōnstituō, cōnstituere (con- 'with' + statuō 'to put up, establish')
