One way to picture it: your mind takes something in and holds it, and from that holding a new thing starts to grow — an idea, a plan, or a child.

From the word’s history

Latin concipere = con- (together) + capere (to take): to take something in and hold it. Both English uses — forming an idea in the mind and becoming pregnant — are the same 'taking in and carrying' picture.

Wiktionary: conceive < Middle English conceyven < Old French concevoir < Latin concipiō, concipere (con- + capiō 'take')

Two branches

come up with an idea · verb · C2

To think of a new idea, plan, or design and develop it in your mind.

become pregnant · verb · C2

To become pregnant. You can also use it about a woman or a female animal starting a baby.
