To describe what someone or something is like, in the particular way that you see them.

Picture the one feature that makes a thing recognisably itself — the quality you would name if you had to name only one. The verb can work in either direction: the feature can do the work (it characterizes the thing), or a person can do it, choosing which feature to name and thereby deciding how the thing gets seen.
