Something characterless has no special or interesting qualities. People say it of places and things more than of close friends: a characterless hotel, a characterless stretch of road, a characterless modern block. It means bland, easy to forget, with no flavour of its own — not “evil,” and not “not a character in a story.” Used of a person it is rather : it suggests they leave no mark. The word is slightly formal, the sort you find in reviews and complaints. A quiet person can still have character; characterless is about lacking distinctive colour, not about being shy.
