Fill it and it is round, fat and slow; let the gas out and it collapses into a heap of cloth. Most later uses of blimp can be read off that one picture of something swollen up from the inside.

The origin is not settled. The account most often given is that the word imitates the sound a non-rigid airship makes when its skin is thumped, and credits Lt. A. D. Cunningham of the British Royal Navy in 1915. The often-repeated story about military classes Type A-rigid and Type B-limp is recorded as false.
