An airship is a large aircraft with no wings. It has an engine, and it is filled with gas so that it floats in the sky, like a long balloon you can steer. Zeppelins and blimps are kinds of airship. It is not an : an needs wings and speed; an airship stays up because the gas is lighter than air. They were more common a hundred years ago; now you mostly see a fat advertising blimp, or pictures in a history book. A hot-air balloon is a cousin, but a balloon has no engine and is much harder to steer. Though actually, do not mix the craft up with a : an airship stays in our sky; it does not go into space. The word is the flying machine, not a ship on the sea with air in its name.
