Name-calling is when people pick ugly or words and stick them on someone, on purpose, to hurt them or make them look small. It is not just saying a person's name. It is choosing a label that stings — stupid, fat, a rude word for their body, their family, their accent. Children do it in the playground; grown-ups do it in arguments and online. Teachers, parents, and news people almost always say it as a bad thing: an attack made of words, not fists. The older everyday phrase is the same idea: to call someone names. Though actually, a nickname that everyone likes is not name-calling. The point is the wish to insult.
