    A barney is a noisy argument — voices up, the kind of row you can hear through a wall. It is British and Australian informal. You have a barney with someone; less often, people use barney as a verb, to argue. It can feel a little closer to a scrap than to a quiet disagreement. Though actually, it is not the man’s name Barney, and it is not the purple dinosaur. People love a neat story that it comes from Barney (“trouble”) in Cockney rhyming slang, but that cannot be right: this word was already around in the 1800s, long before that cartoon.

組成Unknown, for this “argument” word. It is often wrongly explained as Cockney rhyming slang from Barney Rubble (trouble); that story is later than the word. The personal name Barney is a different item (from an Old English name, or from “barley” + “island”) and does not explain the row.
