Old English berern / bereærn, literally 'barley house' — bere ('barley') + ærn ('dwelling, storehouse'), later contracted to bern, barn. The word was a store for grain before it was anything else.
古英語的 berern／bereærn 字面意思就是「大麥的屋子」：bere（大麥）＋ ærn（房舍、儲藏處），後來縮成 bern、barn。也就是說這個字一開始講的就是「放穀物的那間屋」，儲存空間才是它的本義，養牲口是後來擴出去的用法。這也解釋了為什麼它給人的第一印象永遠是「一個大容器」而不是「一個住人的家」。
