A barnyard is the open ground on a farm that sits among the farm buildings — the barn, the sheds, the places where animals sleep. It is not the barn itself. The barn is the big building; the barnyard is the dusty or muddy yard in front of it and around it, where chickens walk, a tractor waits, and the smell of animals hangs in the air. Farmers and people who write about country life use this word. In stories it often feels rural and a little old: a place of noise, dirt, and work, not a pretty garden. People also stretch it — barnyard smells, barnyard animals — meaning the rough, messy world of that yard, not a street or a park. Though actually, American English uses barnyard more readily; in Britain people often just say for the same kind of place.
