Something avoidable is a bad thing you could have stayed away from, or stopped, if someone had been more careful. An avoidable accident did not have to happen. An avoidable mistake is one you could have caught. We almost always use it about problems, delays, and harm — not about parties or presents. The opposite is : then nobody could have stopped it. It is a calm, slightly formal word; a teacher or a report will use it more than a child at play.
