Picture two things with a gap opened up between them — pulled away from each other so they no longer touch or stay together. That gap is 'apart'. From it grows everything else: a gap in space (stand far apart), a gap in time (born two years apart), a gap between people (they live apart), and the strongest version — something pulled so far that it comes to pieces (fall apart, tear apart).
