If a person, family, farm, or country is self-sufficient, they can provide what they need without help from outside. A self-sufficient farm grows its own food. A self-sufficient country makes its own energy or goods so it does not have to buy everything from abroad. A self-sufficient person can live and solve problems without always asking family or the state. It is an adjective, and it is usually a compliment. Though actually, people use it a little loosely: someone who "lives self-sufficiently" may still buy tools, petrol, or medicine. English built the word from self- + sufficient; it copies an old Greek idea, αὐτάρκης (autárkēs), "enough in yourself". The noun is .
