    To officially end a law, rule, tax, or system, so that it does not exist any more. It is used especially about something that has been in place for a long time, and the decision is meant to be permanent.

    abolish 講的是「用正式的決定把一個制度、法律或規定結束掉」，而且是永久的——從那一刻起就不存在了，不是這次先暫停。可以想成它就像從「讓它消失」長出來：拉丁文的 abolere 有「消掉、抹去」的意思，所以 abolish 後面接的多半是存在很久、寫在紙上的東西，例如 abolish slavery（廢除奴隸制度）、abolish a tax（廢除一項稅）、abolish a rule（廢除一條規定）。跟 cancel 容易搞混：cancel 是取消一次的活動（cancel the picnic），abolish 是廢掉整套制度。
