Picture a front yard in a hot dry town with no grass in it: pale gravel, a few thick-leaved plants that hold their own water, bark around their roots, one small tree throwing shade. Nobody stands there with a hose. That yard is the whole word. Everything else xeriscape does is that yard seen from a different angle — the practice that produces it, or the work of making one.
