Landscaping is the work of changing the ground around a house, park, or road so it looks planned and pleasant: putting in trees, bushes, grass, paths, maybe stones or a pond. People also use it for the finished look — “I like the landscaping in front of the school.” It comes from the verb to landscape. Though actually, gardening is the everyday word for planting and by hand; landscaping sounds bigger, more like a design job, often done by a company. You can spend money “on landscaping” the way you spend it on a kitchen — as a project.
