Xeriscaping is designing a garden so that it needs very little water. Instead of a thirsty green lawn, you use plants that can live in dry weather — cactus, succulents, tough local grasses — plus stones, gravel, bark and shade, so what water there is stays in the soil. The word came from Denver, Colorado in the early 1980s, where the water company was trying to get people to stop pouring water on their lawns, and it is still mostly an American word: you hear it a lot in dry western states like Arizona, Nevada and California, and much less in Britain or in Taiwan. It works as a noun ("xeriscaping saves water") and there is also the noun xeriscape for the garden itself, plus a verb: "we xeriscaped the front yard". People sometimes call it "zero-scaping" and think it means a yard with nothing in it — that is a mistake born from the sound of the word. A good xeriscape can be full of colour; it is just chosen for dryness, not covered in grass.
