由 wide 加 -th 組成，十六世紀末才出現。

Think of standing at one side of something and measuring straight across to the other side — left edge to right edge. Not top to bottom (that is height), not front to back (that is depth or length). Width is the across-measurement.

可以想成你站在一個東西的左邊，拉一條線直直量到右邊：從這一側橫過去到另一側有多遠。不是從上量到下（那是 height），也不是從前量到後（那是 depth 或 length），而是橫向的那一段距離。桌子、河、布、走道、螢幕，只要問「橫著有多寬」，量出來的就是 width。這個橫向的距離感是後面幾個意思的共同來源。
