You can picture weight as 'how heavy a thing is — how hard it presses down'. Start with that downward press you feel lifting a stone. From it grow real heavy objects (a , a small metal piece on a scale), then the felt heaviness of a worry pressing on you, and finally the figurative 'heaviness' of an opinion or a person — how much they press down on a decision.
