Married. This is a formal word, and it is used mostly in the set language of weddings, announcements and older writing rather than in ordinary conversation.

One way to hold wedded: two things tied together in front of witnesses, with no plan to them. That is the marriage itself in the first use. The picture then stretches in two directions — to the shining happiness that the tie is supposed to bring, and to a person who is tied that tightly to an idea instead of to a partner. The word also tells you where you are: it is formal, ceremonial language, so it shows up in vows, cards and reports far more than in conversation.
