Marital means relating to marriage — the life two people have as spouses, not the wedding party itself. Marital status is the form-filling use: single, married, divorced. Marital problems, the marital home, marital rights are the heavier uses. It is a somewhat formal, paper-and-news word; in casual talk people just say “their marriage” or “married life.” The Latin started from “husband,” but though actually English marital is not “husband-only”: it covers the marriage as a whole. It has nothing to do with war. That is martial, a different word that only looks similar.
