You can picture something kept on your body over time — clothes on your back, a ring on your finger, an expression on your face. Two things grow from this: what you carry on you (clothes, , a look), and what slow constant contact does to a thing (it rubs thin and wears out). The noun side covers both — 'wear' as the clothes you put on, and 'wear' as the damage that long use leaves behind.
