    Apparel means clothes. You will see it on shop signs, in catalogues, and in business English: women's apparel, sports apparel, the apparel industry. It sounds more formal and more “shop-like” than clothes. Ordinary people at home usually say clothes or clothing; apparel turns up when someone is selling, listing, or dressing the idea up. There is an old verb to apparel, meaning to dress someone, but you almost never need that now — though actually you may still meet it in very old writing. In modern English, think of the noun: things you wear, talked about as a line of goods. A parent buying a T-shirt still says clothes. A store listing still often says apparel.

組成From Old French apareillier. It is a doublet of parrel (a band that holds a yard to a mast on a ship): same older source, different jobs in English now.
