Latin erodere = ex- ('away') + rodere ('to gnaw') — the same rodere behind 'rodent'. The root picture is something being nibbled away bite by tiny bite.
拉丁文 ērōdere 由 ex-（去掉）加 rōdere（啃）組成，而 rōdere 也是 rodent（齧齒動物）的來源。所以字根裡藏的是一隻慢慢啃的動物：一口一口，每口都很小，但東西確實在變少。這正好對上現代用法的核心——不是撞碎，是啃掉。
