You can think of a seed still sitting in its packet in a drawer. Everything the tree will ever be is already inside it, complete and real. It just has not been put in the ground. `Realize` is the putting-in-the-ground step — making something actual, whether that means building a plan, using an ability, or selling a share for cash. `Un-` says that step has not been taken. So `unrealized` never means 'not there'. It means 'there, but not yet turned into anything you can touch, use or spend'.

From the word’s history

Formed from un- + realized. The realize inside it is the 'make real' sense, not the 'understand' sense, which is why the negative points at an unfinished step rather than at a misunderstanding.

這個字是 un- 加上 realized 組成的。裡面的 realize 是「使成真」那一個,不是「明白」那一個。所以加上 un- 之後,指的是一個還沒完成的步驟,而不是一種誤會。

Two branches

還沒做出來的能力與計畫

最直接的一層:種子還在抽屜裡。能力、計畫、夢想都是真的存在,只是沒有人把它做出來。

adjective · B2

Not made real yet. Something that could exist or could happen — an ability, a plan, a hope — is still only a possibility, because nobody has turned it into a real, finished thing.

未實現的;未發揮的

還沒換成現金的帳面數字

同一顆種子,換到錢上面。你手上的東西漲了或跌了,但你沒賣,所以那個數字還沒落地。

adjective · C1

Used about money you have gained or lost only on paper. What you own is now worth more or less than you paid, but you have not sold it, so the gain or the loss has not turned into real money yet.

未實現的(帳面上的)
