An older adjective for a person whose own sense of being a man or a woman does not match the sex written down for them when they were born. It means the same thing as the adjective 'transgender' — the '-ed' adds nothing. And that is exactly the problem with it. In careful English today, people write 'a transgender woman', not 'a transgendered woman', because the '-ed' ending makes it sound like something that was done TO the person, the way 'adopted' or 'injured' work. Trans people mostly say they are not something that happened to them; they are simply who they are. So 'transgendered' now sounds dated, and to many readers a little cold or , even when the writer meant no harm at all. You will still meet it in books, news stories, and dictionaries from about 1990 to 2010, so it is worth being able to read. When you write, use 'transgender' (adjective) or 'trans' (shorter, very common, friendly). Note also that this dictionary's own wording — tying the word to 'sexual behaviour' — is out of date; being transgender is about a person's sense of who they are, not about who they are attracted to or what they do in bed. Those are separate things.
