性別
Think of gender as sorting people or things into a 'kind' or 'class' — the most familiar split being male and female. It answers 'which group does this belong to?'
From Latin genus (via Old French gendre) 'kind, sort, class, race, family' — from a root meaning 'give birth, beget.' Gender is at heart the 'kind or class' you belong to, which is why it later also named the male/female classes of words in grammar.
源自拉丁文 genus(經古法文 gendre),意思是「種類、類別、族群、家系」,字根有「生育、生出」的意味。gender 骨子裡就是你所屬的「那一類、那一群」——這也是為什麼它後來還能拿去指文法裡把詞分成陰陽的那種「類別」。

把「類別」這個核心搬到語言裡:有些語言會把名詞、形容詞標成陽性、陰性或中性——等於給每個詞派一個「類」,正好借用了 gender 這個字。
