Give that habit a lifetime and a subject and you get the famous thinker; give it an adjective and you get a type of mind; and in joking speech the same word can slide onto the brain doing the work, or onto the question that stopped everyone.

Wiktionary gives thinker as Middle English thinkere, equivalent to think + -er, and lists the same build in Dutch denker, German Denker and Danish tænker. The word is simply 'the one that thinks', which is why it can stretch from a philosopher to a brain to a hard question.
