    Having the feeling you get when something happens that you were not expecting, or when you find out something you did not know.

    surprised 講的是「事情跟我想的不一樣，心裡愣了一下」的感覺，被形容的一定是有這個感覺的人：I was surprised、He looked surprised。可以想成 surprise 就像從你沒在看的那一邊冒出來的東西，-ed 把那一下落在人身上。常接 at／by（surprised at the price）、to + 原形動詞（surprised to see you）或 that 子句。它是這組詞裡最輕的一個：比 amazed 更淡，比 astonished 更日常——只是沒料到，不一定到不敢相信。

You can picture the half-second after something arrives that you had not lined up for — a friend appears at your door, a bill is twice what you thought, someone tells you a fact you never knew. Your face moves before your thinking catches up: go up, you stop mid-sentence. Surprised names how the person on the receiving end of that moment feels, not the event itself.
