watch secretly · verb · B1
to secretly watch someone or collect information about an enemy or a group you compete with
Picture someone watching from a hidden spot, eyes fixed on a target, quietly gathering what they see. That act of secret, careful watching is the seed of every 'spy'.
From Old French espier 'to observe, watch closely', from a Germanic source, and ultimately the PIE root *spek- 'to observe' — the same root under 'inspect' and 'spectacle'. At heart 'spy' is simply watching.
