One way to hold it: giving up a claim you were holding. Hand back the post and you have resigned; hand over your resistance to something you cannot change and you have resigned yourself to it. Both are letting go of something you were holding onto — in one case a job, in the other the fight.

From the word’s history

Resign is from Old French resigner and Latin resignare "to cancel, give back", from re- "opposite" + signare "to make an entry in an account book" — the image is an entry made on the opposite side of the ledger, cancelling an earlier claim. "Give up a position" is recorded from the late 14c.; "give oneself up to an emotion or situation" appears around 1718.

resign 來自古法語 resigner、拉丁語 resignare「取消、交還」，由 re-「相反」＋ signare「在帳簿上記一筆」組成——畫面是在帳簿的另一邊再記一筆，把原本那筆勾銷掉。「辭去職位」這個意思在十四世紀晚期就有了；「把自己交給某種情緒或處境」則要到 1718 年左右才出現。
