- 1a/səˈmɪtɪk/Semitic peoples閃族的
Belonging to, or relating to, a group of peoples of the Middle East and North Africa who speak these languages, including Arabs and Jews, and in earlier times Babylonians, and Phoenicians.

Here the word points at people rather than at language. It covers Arabs and Jews today, and in history books it also covers the Babylonians, the Assyrians and the Phoenicians. The grouping was made by scholars, and it was built on the languages these peoples spoke, so it is a label about language history more than about how anyone looks. In the Bible the same group is traced back to Shem, a son of Noah, and books with a religious frame sometimes say Semitic to mean the descendants of Shem. Older dictionaries call this a race; peoples is the ordinary word for it now.

- 2a/səˈmɪtɪk/Semitic languages閃語族的
Belonging to the family of related languages that includes Arabic, Hebrew, Amharic, and Maltese, and, in ancient times, Akkadian and Phoenician.
這個意思只講語言。Semitic 指一群彼此有親戚關係的語言。它們的關係,就像西班牙文跟義大利文那樣。現在最大的兩支是阿拉伯語和希伯來語。衣索比亞的阿姆哈拉語、馬爾他語也在裡面。古代的阿卡德語、腓尼基語現在沒有人說了。課本上最常見的寫法是 Semitic languages。說一個語言是 Semitic,跟說話的人信什麼宗教無關。
This sense is only about language. Semitic names a group of languages that are related to one another, in the way Spanish and Italian are related. Arabic and Hebrew are the two largest living members. Amharic, spoken in Ethiopia, and Maltese also belong to the group. Older members such as Akkadian and Phoenician are no longer spoken by anyone. You will meet the word most often in the fixed phrase Semitic languages, in history books and in language classes. Calling a language Semitic says nothing about the religion of the people who speak it.

- 3a/səˈmɪtɪk/Jewish猶太(人)的
Jewish; belonging to or relating to Jewish people in particular, rather than to the whole group of Semitic peoples.
這是比較窄的用法。寬的用法把阿拉伯人和猶太人一起算進去。這個用法只指猶太人。讀者最常在 anti-Semitic 這個長字裡遇到它。單獨用的 Semitic 這個意思,多半出現在比較舊的書寫裡。今天要講猶太人,最平常的字還是 Jewish。同一個字形有寬窄兩種讀法,所以要看整句話才知道是哪一個。
This is the narrow use. The wide sense covers Arabs and Jews together, but here the word points at Jewish people only. A reader usually meets this narrow reading inside the longer word anti-Semitic, which means showing hatred towards Jewish people. On its own, Semitic in this sense turns up mostly in older writing and in careful historical prose, where the plain words Jewish and Jewish people are the ordinary modern choice. Because the same form carries both the wide and the narrow meaning, the surrounding sentence is what tells you which one is meant.
