A Semite, in the old dictionary sense, is a person grouped with Jews, Arabs, and, in ancient history, peoples such as the Babylonians and . The name comes from Shem (also written Sem), a son of Noah in the Bible, plus -ite, “a person of.” Though actually, “race” is a messy word here, and many careful writers now avoid it. Modern scholars are far more comfortable talking about Semitic languages — Hebrew, Arabic, , and others — than about one Semite “race.” In everyday English you rarely hear someone called a Semite at all. What you hear constantly is antisemitism (also written anti-Semitism), which in real use means hatred of Jews, not of every Arabic speaker. The noun can feel academic, biblical, or dated, and it is easy to hurt people if you swing it loosely. Use it with care, if you use it at all.
