Aramaic is an old language of southwest Asia. For a long time it was the shared language people used across different groups — a lingua franca — in that part of the world. Some communities in Syria and Lebanon, and nearby, still speak forms of it. It is the language Jesus most likely used in daily life, and parts of the Hebrew Bible are in Aramaic, not Hebrew. It is related to Hebrew and Arabic (they belong to the same language family), but it is not Arabic and it is not Hebrew — the similar look of the English names is easy to trip on. You will mostly meet the word in history, church, or language class, not in everyday chat. It can also be an adjective: Aramaic script, an Aramaic speaker.
組成From the land-name Aram (an old name for a region in what is now Syria) + -ic “of that place,” through Greek Aramaïkós and Latin Aramaicus. The Greek was built to match the Aramaic word for “Aramean.”
