1. 1n/ˈhiːbruː/the Hebrew language希伯來語

The language of the Jewish people, used for thousands of years in prayer and study and spoken today in Israel. Hebrew is also the name of the alphabet it is written in, which runs from right to left.

    文法不可數名詞:通常不加 a/an,也不加 -s 來表示複數。

    「Hebrew」是猶太人的語言。這個字永遠大寫。它是語言名稱,所以不加 a,也不加 the。要說 speak Hebrew、in Hebrew。同一個字也指那套文字。所以說「這是 Hebrew」可以指語言,也可以指字母。希伯來文由右往左寫。因此希伯來文的書,翻開的方向跟英文書相反。

    示範例句 · Example

My aunt is learning Hebrew so she can read the letters my great-grandmother left.

    中文翻譯我阿姨正在學希伯來語,這樣她就能讀我曾祖母留下的信。

Hebrew is the name of a language, so it is uncountable and always takes a capital H: you speak Hebrew, you say something in Hebrew, and you never say a Hebrew or the Hebrew about the language. The same word names the writing system, so a sign can be in Hebrew whether you are thinking of the words or of the letters themselves. Because the letters run from right to left, a book printed in Hebrew opens at the side an English reader would call the back.

  2. 2n/ˈhiːbruː/ancient Jewish person希伯來人

A member of the Jewish people in ancient times, a people who traced their line back to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and whose story is told in the Bible.

    文法可數名詞:前面可以加 a/an,要表示複數時常常加 -s。

    「Hebrew」當「人」用的時候可以數。一個人是 a Hebrew。一群人是 the Hebrews。這個用法主要講古代。多半出現在歷史課、博物館和聖經裡。講現在的猶太人,英文通常說 Jew 或 Jewish person。用 Hebrew 指現代的人會顯得很古老。這群人被認為出自亞伯拉罕這一支。他們的語言後來也跟著叫 Hebrew。

This sense is countable: one Hebrew, two Hebrews, the Hebrews as a whole people. It belongs to history and to old writing, so you meet it in lessons, in museums and in the Bible. When English speakers talk about Jewish people alive today, they normally say Jew or Jewish person instead. The people came first and the language took their name, which is why the same word does both jobs.
