Hold a small card with ruled boxes on it. Each box is waiting for one thing to be written in, and the boxes were decided before anything happened — hole by hole, inning by inning. When the event is over, the card tells the whole story in numbers, because nothing was left to memory. Every use of the word keeps those ruled boxes; what changes is who fills them in and what is being measured.
