Picture a written-out plan of steps laid out in order, to be followed one after another. 'Program' is that ordered list of instructions — whether it's the steps you feed a computer so it knows exactly what to do, or the order of events planned for an evening, a TV channel, or a course. The same skeleton sits underneath: a sequence someone has set out in advance to be run through.
