A scoreboard is the board — or the big screen — that shows the points in a game. Football, baseball, basketball: you look up to see who is winning, how much time is left, sometimes fouls or who is batting. Old ones were wood or metal, with numbers hung by hand. Now they are often huge lights, but people still call them the scoreboard. The word is plain and practical. Commentators say “Look at the scoreboard.” Coaches tell a team not to look at the scoreboard, meaning: play the next minute; do not get lost in the numbers. Though actually, that already stretches the object into “the result as it stands.” It is not a classroom , and it is not a scorecard (the paper a player or umpire on).

組成From score + board. Score is an old word for points; it goes back through Middle English to older words for a cut or a notch — people used to keep count by cutting marks. Board is the flat surface that shows the numbers.
